Portfolio

Quill

Quill is a literary, typographic portfolio built for writers and journalists — no photographs, just ink on warm paper. A refined serif hero carries the author's name and trade, a clippings-style list sets out selected writing by publication, title and year over hairline rules, and a short "what I write" row and about line keep things personal. One muted oxblood accent and classic book proportions give it the calm of a printed page.

Literary and type-led — ink on warm paper, hairline rules and one quiet oxblood accent stand in for any image.

What I write

Essays

First-person pieces on place, memory and the ordinary things that turn out to matter.

Reporting

Longform features and profiles, reported slowly and on foot, for magazines and reviews.

Fiction

Short stories and a novel-in-progress about leaving, returning and the houses in between.

About

I write about the places people pass through and the lives they keep there — quietly, and usually a little behind deadline.

My work has appeared in The Paper Lantern, Northwind Review and Meridian, among others. I have reported from harbour towns and night buses, taught a workshop on the first-person essay, and am at work on a first novel about the long way home. For assignments, readings or the occasional argument about commas, I am easy to reach.

A commission, a question, a comma —

Design rules

The system, applied to any site

  • Let type carry everything: with no photographs, lean on a refined serif at editorial scale, generous leading and wide margins so the page reads like a well-set book.
  • Stay warm and literary — a paper-cream canvas (#F7F1E6) with near-black ink text and a single muted oxblood accent (#8A3B30) reserved for links, the byline rule and active states.
  • Pair a display serif (Fraunces) for the name and headlines with a readable text serif (Spectral) for body and metadata; set publications and years in small letter-spaced caps.
  • Build the work as a clippings list — publication, article title and year stacked in rows divided by hairline rules, like a column of bylines rather than a card grid.
  • Carry structure with rules and whitespace, never boxes, shadows or fills; corners stay perfectly square at 0px.
  • Keep copy spare, first-person and confident — short literary sentences, real fictional pieces, no marketing noise.

Baked fresh every sunrise

Warm bread, slow mornings, a kinder kind of breakfast.

A small neighborhood bakery turning honest flour, patient time and a hot oven into crusty loaves, buttery pastries and the best excuse to leave the house early.

Today: Country Loaf

$8

Stone-milled flour, 24-hour rise. Out of the oven at 7am.

Today’s bakes

A short, ever-changing list. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Stone Country Loaf

$8

Stone-milled wheat, 24-hour cold rise, blistered crust.

Brown-Butter Croissant

$5

Laminated by hand, folded thirty-six times, shatteringly flaky.

Honey Rye Bun

$4

Dark rye crumb, wildflower honey glaze, toasted caraway.

Our story
“We started with one borrowed oven, a sack of flour, and the stubborn belief that bread tastes better when nobody’s in a hurry.”

Eight years on, we still mix every dough by hand, still proof it overnight, and still sell out by noon most days. Flour & Ember is run by the same two bakers who opened it — you’ll usually find us dusted in flour behind the counter.

— Mara & Tomás, founders & head bakers
