Experimental

Riso

Riso is an experimental, print-flavoured template for a small zine press or independent publisher. It leans hard into the risograph look: a warm paper-cream stage, two punchy inks overprinting with deliberate misregistration, grainy halftone dot fields and stickers tilted by hand. It ships a collage hero, an issues grid of zine covers as colour blocks, an about-the-press story, a shop & subscribe band and a tactile footer.

Loud, tactile and hand-made — a freshly printed zine still smelling of ink.

About the press

A two-colour machine and a lot of stubbornness

Riso Press started as one secondhand duplicator in a spare room and a rule we still keep: two inks per issue, no more. The limits are the point — they make us choose colour like it costs something, because it does.

Every zine is drawn, laid out, printed and stapled by the same small hands, in short runs that sell out and rarely come back. The slight misregistration isn’t a mistake. It’s a signature.

Design rules

The system, applied to any site

  • Print on warm paper, not white: use a cream stage (around #F4ECD8) with near-black text so every colour reads like ink soaked into paper rather than pixels on a screen.
  • Commit to two punchy riso inks only — a fluorescent pink and an electric blue — and let them overprint: stack semi-transparent blocks of each colour with mix-blend-mode multiply so the overlaps make a third hue.
  • Embrace misregistration: offset duplicated headlines and colour blocks by a few pixels so they look slightly off-press, and tilt badges, stickers and cards by small rotations to feel cut out and glued down.
  • Layer grain and halftone everywhere: build dot fields with repeating CSS radial-gradients and lean on chunky black hairline borders so flat colour never feels too clean.
  • Set type loud and structural: a heavy display face (Archivo Black) in big, tight, often uppercase headlines against a plain geometric body, with letter-spaced micro-labels acting like rubber-stamp captions.
  • Make every cover a colour block, not a photo: render zine issues as duotone halftone rectangles with stamped titles so the grid stays graphic, cheap-to-print and unmistakably risograph.

Our story
“We started with one borrowed oven, a sack of flour, and the stubborn belief that bread tastes better when nobody’s in a hurry.”

Eight years on, we still mix every dough by hand, still proof it overnight, and still sell out by noon most days. Flour & Ember is run by the same two bakers who opened it — you’ll usually find us dusted in flour behind the counter.

— Mara & Tomás, founders & head bakers
