Editorial

Editorial is a portfolio template built for designers, photographers and creatives who want their work to read like a printed magazine. It pairs near-black ink on an off-white page with dramatic, oversized display-serif headlines and a strict typographic hierarchy. Asymmetric grids, restrained color and big imagery give selected work room to breathe.

Confident, gallery-quiet and unmistakably editorial — print sensibility on the web.

Work that earns a second look.

About

I treat a website like a printed page — measured, paced and quietly opinionated about whitespace.

For a decade I have worked between editorial design and brand, first in newsrooms and gallery studios, now independently. My work tends to be calm on the surface and stubborn underneath — built on grids, set in real type, and made to last longer than a trend cycle. I care most about the moment a reader slows down.

What I do

S1

Art Direction

Concept, visual language and the editorial logic that holds a body of work together across pages and platforms.

S2

Brand & Identity

Marks, type systems and the small rules that let a brand stay recognisably itself as it grows.

S3

Print & Books

Layout, grids and production for catalogues, monographs and the occasional stubbornly physical object.

Design rules

The system, applied to any site

  • Build the page on an off-white paper canvas with near-black ink, and keep the palette monochrome except for a single warm accent reserved for links, numerals and small emphasis.
  • Lead every section with an oversized display serif: set hero headlines at roughly 80-128px with tight -0.02em tracking and 0.95 line-height, then drop hard to 16-18px body, so the typographic scale jumps by at least 4x between levels.
  • Lay sections out asymmetrically on a 12-column grid — offset headings, let work spill to one edge, and avoid centering everything; tension between left-aligned type and full-bleed imagery is the point.
  • Be generous and disciplined with whitespace: pad primary sections to at least 120px vertically, cap measure at ~62 characters, and let empty space frame the work rather than filling it.
  • Keep corners nearly sharp (4px max), borders hairline and ink-colored, and use uppercase letter-spaced labels with small index numerals to signal an editorial, catalogued feel.

Today’s bakes

Stone Country Loaf

$8

Stone-milled wheat, 24-hour cold rise, blistered crust.

Brown-Butter Croissant

$5

Laminated by hand, folded thirty-six times, shatteringly flaky.

Honey Rye Bun

$4

Dark rye crumb, wildflower honey glaze, toasted caraway.

Our story
“We started with one borrowed oven, a sack of flour, and the stubborn belief that bread tastes better when nobody’s in a hurry.”

Eight years on, we still mix every dough by hand, still proof it overnight, and still sell out by noon most days. Flour & Ember is run by the same two bakers who opened it — you’ll usually find us dusted in flour behind the counter.
