Inkwell

Inkwell is a newsletter landing page that reads like the cover of a well-made magazine. It pairs a warm cream paper background with ink-black type, a single terracotta accent and an oversized display serif headline, arranged in a tidy bento grid of cards. The layout puts the subscribe form, social proof and a recent-issue preview side by side so a curious reader can opt in within seconds.

Warm, literary and unhurried — a print-magazine sensibility translated into a friendly bento grid.

About the writer

Hi, I’m Marlow Reade.

I’ve spent fifteen years writing essays, ghostwriting books, and filling far too many notebooks. Inkwell is where I think out loud about the craft — the part nobody tweets about. It’s small, unhurried, and written for people who still like a good long read.

Start your Sunday with one good read.

Design rules

The system, applied to any site

  • Lay the page out as a bento grid of rounded cards on a warm cream paper canvas (#FAF6EE) — vary tile sizes so the headline + subscribe tile dominates while smaller tiles hold proof, imagery and a recent issue.
  • Lead with an oversized display serif headline (Fraunces or similar, ~48-72px, tight -0.02em tracking, 1.0 line-height) set in near-black ink, and keep body copy in a calm 16-18px sans at 1.6 line-height.
  • Stay almost monochrome — cream, paper-white surfaces and ink text — and reserve a single warm terracotta accent (#C2562E) only for the subscribe button, links and small emphasis.
  • Give cards soft 16px corners, hairline warm borders (#E4DCCB) instead of heavy shadows, and pad each tile generously (24-32px) so every block feels like a clean magazine module.
  • Make subscribing the obvious next step: one prominent email field with a high-contrast terracotta button, a short reassurance line, and concrete social proof (reader count, cadence) sitting right beside it.

Baked fresh every sunrise

Warm bread, slow mornings, a kinder kind of breakfast.

A small neighborhood bakery turning honest flour, patient time and a hot oven into crusty loaves, buttery pastries and the best excuse to leave the house early.

Today: Country Loaf

$8

Stone-milled flour, 24-hour rise. Out of the oven at 7am.

Today’s bakes

A short, ever-changing list. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Stone Country Loaf

$8

Stone-milled wheat, 24-hour cold rise, blistered crust.

Brown-Butter Croissant

$5

Laminated by hand, folded thirty-six times, shatteringly flaky.

Honey Rye Bun

$4

Dark rye crumb, wildflower honey glaze, toasted caraway.

Our story
“We started with one borrowed oven, a sack of flour, and the stubborn belief that bread tastes better when nobody’s in a hurry.”

Eight years on, we still mix every dough by hand, still proof it overnight, and still sell out by noon most days. Flour & Ember is run by the same two bakers who opened it — you’ll usually find us dusted in flour behind the counter.

— Mara & Tomás, founders & head bakers
