Velvet Room

Velvet Room is an intimate, hand-set template for soul and jazz singer-songwriters who want vinyl warmth rather than neon glare. A deep espresso-charcoal canvas carries fine grain and a soft gold halo under an elegant high-contrast serif display, with cream ink and terracotta accents. Its signature is a warm "now playing" record block — a slowly spinning vinyl behind the real cover art, a breathing equalizer and a tracklist read like liner notes — anchored by a listen-on streaming row, live tour dates, a discography grid, an intimate about with a portrait, and a hand-written mailing list. All motion is pure CSS and respects prefers-reduced-motion.

Warm, analog and intimate — vinyl-lit gold-on-charcoal editorial for a voice made for the small hours.

Velvet Room

Ten songs recorded to tape in a warm room after midnight — brushed drums, upright bass and a voice that sits close enough to feel the breath between the notes.

About

A voice built for the small hours.

Odessa Rae grew up between a church choir loft and her grandmother's record collection — gospel on Sunday, Nina and Bill Evans by Tuesday. She writes the way she sings: slowly, honestly, one held note at a time.

Recorded live to two-inch tape at Amber Street with a five-piece band in the room, Velvet Room is her most intimate record yet — the sound of a singer letting you sit close.

Design rules

The system, applied to any site

  • Anchor the page on a warm espresso-charcoal canvas (around #17110D) with cream ink and let a single burnished gold carry the accents — headlines, hairlines, streaming marks — kept in reserve rather than flooding large areas; terracotta is a sparing second warmth.
  • Set display type in an elegant high-contrast serif (Playfair Display or similar) with italic accents for song and album titles, then drop to a calm neutral body font and a monospace for uppercase liner-note labels.
  • Add analog texture with fine grain, a soft blurred gold halo and paper-warm surfaces (hairline borders, faint inner light, deep soft shadows) instead of flat panels or hard neon.
  • Make the latest release the centre of gravity: a "now playing" record block with a slowly spinning vinyl behind the real cover art, a breathing equalizer, and a tracklist read straight down like liner notes.
  • Give every action a clear home — a listen-on streaming row of pill links, tour dates as a readable date/city/venue/tickets list, a discography grid with year, and an intimate mailing-list capture — and keep motion slow, warm and reduced-motion-safe.
